The flu vaccine wills shortly be available in our office. The injectable vaccine for the 2015-16 flu season is likely to come first, with the flumist to follow in September or early October. As always, we cannot be sure when we will get it until it actually arrives in the office. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a flu vaccine for every child ages 6 months and older. Although many people think of the flu as a mild illness that will pass shortly, every year over 200,000 people are hospitalized and 3,000 to 5,000 people die due to the flu. Infants and young children are at especially high risk for serious disease and death from the flu, but the flu also kills many completely healthy people every year. A person who is infected with the influenza virus can spread it easily by sneezing, coughing, or even just talking in the same room as your child. As well, many people are infectious before they have any symptoms of the illness and therefore spread it unknowingly. The best possible way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get a flu vaccine every year. We will have both the inactivated "shot" and live attenuated flumist available in our office for all our patients. Schedule an appointment to get your flu vaccine when it is available.
